Courtesy Visit of Special Chinese Envoy

The Seychelles Ports Authority (SPA) had the honour of welcoming Special Envoy of President Xi Jinping Mr Liu Wei, Minister of Transport of the People’s Republic of China during a courtesy visit to the Authority’s headquarters on Sunday, 28 June 2026.


The visit formed part of the Special Envoy’s official programme in Seychelles and provided an opportunity for constructive discussions on strengthening cooperation between the two countries in the maritime and port sectors. In attendance and to welcome Mr Liu Wei on his visit was the Seychelles’ Minister for Transport, Ports and Civil Aviation, Ms Veronique Laporte.


Discussions centred around the longstanding friendship between Seychelles and China, while exploring opportunities to further deepen cooperation in areas of mutual interest.


Emphasis was placed on the potential for enhanced diplomatic engagement between SPA and its Chinese counterparts, with both sides expressing a shared interest in fostering stronger institutional partnerships, knowledge exchange, capacity building, and the sharing of best practices in modern port management.


The delegation was also briefed on the role of SPA in facilitating maritime trade, supporting the country’s economic development, and advancing ongoing initiatives aimed at modernising port infrastructure and services.


Minister Laporte welcomed the continued engagement between Seychelles and China, noting that such bilateral exchanges contribute to building lasting partnerships that support the sustainable development of the transport and maritime sectors.


The visit concluded with the delegation’s touring of Mahe Quay and presentation of gifts by the Authority’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Pierre Prosper. Also present during the rencontre was the Executive Management Members of the SPA.
