As part of their Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) lecture, the Seychelles Ports Authority (SPA) facilitated a site visit for students pursuing a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Environmental Science at the University of Seychelles (UniSey).
The visit took place on Wednesday 21st October 2026 at the Commercial Port, Mahe Quay; the site of the proposed Port Victoria Rehabilitation and Extension Project (PVREP). The main objective was to share general knowledge on the project with the students and provide practical insights into ESIA procedures, including the different assessment classes applicable to projects based on their nature, scale, and potential environmental and social impacts.
Understanding ESIA procedures and the different assessment classes is essential in determining the appropriate level of assessment required for a proposed development. It enables environmental practitioners to identify potential impacts, recommend suitable mitigation measures and ensure that environmental and social considerations are integrated into project planning and decision-making. This knowledge also helps promote regulatory compliance, responsible development, and the sustainable use of natural resources.
The visit was led by Ms. Estelle Lau Tee, accompanied by Ms. Tira Vidot, both from SPA’s Port Environment and Sustainability Department. During the visit, students were also introduced to the Authority’s environmental and sustainability initiatives aimed at reducing its carbon footprint and aligning port operations with international standards, norms and best practices.
The visit also provided students with an opportunity to observe daily port operations and gain a better understanding of the activities undertaken at the Commercial Port. This practical experience complemented their academic studies by connecting classroom learning with real-world port operations, environmental management, and sustainable development.
